James Nerlinger

A life assembled
from many materials

I've spent most of my life thinking about how people try to live well — through philosophy, religion, tradition, and hard-earned experience. Over time that interest has grown less abstract and more practical: how we eat, how we care for our bodies, how we keep a home, and how we learn to live within limits rather than constantly pushing against them.

After more than two decades managing heart failure, I received a heart transplant in 2024. Recovery has been slow, instructive, and deeply grounding. It returned me to the basics — real food, routine, rest, and the quiet disciplines that make ordinary life sustainable.

I write across several projects under my own name and under the pen name Eliyahu (נר הדרשן — "Lamp of the Interpreter"). I build iOS and macOS apps through my studio, Deep Dark Abyss Productions. I moderate a large home-cooking community. I make things. I ask questions. I try to pay attention.

Thirty years of getting
hard things done

For more than three decades I've worked at the intersection of enterprise technology, operational leadership, and high-consequence problem solving — leading teams of 50+ professionals, directing mission-critical incidents affecting global operations, and overseeing complex infrastructure transformations across environments ranging from SMBs to Fortune 500 enterprises.

Today I focus on helping organizations identify where AI, automation, and intelligent workflow design can improve execution, reduce operational friction, and solve real business problems — combining executive leadership experience with hands-on technical depth in enterprise systems, managed services, and solutions architecture.

One lesson my career has taught me repeatedly: technology rarely fails first. Communication, process, and decision-making usually fail long before systems do. I help organizations solve complex operational problems where reliability, execution, and sound judgment matter most.
